07 January 2022

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development issued a report reviewing the basic features of development programs for the governorates of North and South Sinai, with the plan for the current fiscal year 21/2022.

Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, stressed that the spatial dimension represents one of the main determinants of achieving comprehensive sustainable development, as observing this dimension leads to ensuring balanced growth between the various regions of the Republic and the governorates, whether in terms of income levels, job opportunities, or the availability of education, health, and utility services public and other services.El-Said added that the spatial development efforts were concerned with three things, the first of which is to give an advanced priority to the development of the Sinai Peninsula and Upper Egypt governorates within the framework of a coherent and integrated development program, and the second is to focus on the rural areas most in need to narrow the internal gap and reduce migration flows to urban areas.El-Said pointed out that the plan for the current fiscal year 21/2022 directs government investments amounting to about EGP 21.1 billion to develop the governorates of North and South Sinai, compared to about EGP 8.2 billion during 20/2021, an increase of about 156%.The report of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development indicated that the total government investments in the plan for the year 21/2022 for the development of the North Sinai Governorate amounted to about EGP 14.1 billion. The other services sector in the governorate accounts for the largest proportion of the total government investments directed to the governorate with 52.9%, followed by the agriculture and land reclamation sector with 17.2%, then the construction and building sector by 9.1%, and the electricity sector by 6.2%.

Next come the sanitation, transportation, storage, educational, and health services sectors, with approximately 1.8% each.Concerning South Sinai Governorate, the report indicated that the total government investments directed to the plan of 21/2022 for the development of the South Sinai Governorate amounted to 7 billion pounds. The water sector accounts for the largest proportion of the total investments by about 23.3%, followed by the other services sector by 22.9%, then the education, agriculture, land reclamation, transport, and storage sectors at rates of 14.6%, 9.9%, and 8.2%, respectively. The development programs in South Sinai Governorate in the agriculture and irrigation sector include several projects, including establishing seven agricultural clusters, digging wells, and constructing dams to protect against the dangers of torrential rains in the governorate, completing the construction of a three-purpose research station, and establishing veterinary units.
