Deputy Minister of Planning visits Gharbia governorate to discuss localization of SDGs plan

Dr. Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development visited recently Gharbia Governorate where he met with the Governor, Dr. Tariq Rahmi, and some officials, to follow up on the governorate’s executive plan, to implement the recommendations of the report on the settlement of the sustainable development goals.The report on the localization of sustainable development goals was drawn up by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in cooperation with the Baseera Center and circulated to all governorates.
The report is based on the Egyptian state’s endeavor to localize sustainable development goals and indicators in all development plans to achieve the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030.The visit witnessed the presence of Dr. Maged Othman, CEO of the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research "Baseera", Dr. Hamdi Shaaban, Vice President of Tanta University, Professor Najwa Al-Ashery, Assistant Secretary, Anba Paula, Metropolitan of Tanta and its dependencies, and His Eminence Sheikh Essam Bakr, President of the Al-Azhar region in Gharbia, and Dr. Safaa Maree, head of the National Council for Women’s branch in Gharbia, and directors and heads of government departments.During his speech, Dr. Ahmed Kamali stressed that the goal of localizing the sustainable development goals is to bridge the development gaps in the governorate and make progress in implementing the development goals.Kamali pointed to the Egyptian state's keenness and commitment to achieving sustainable development goals and its indicators, as Egypt has already developed its national version of the United Nations sustainable development agenda represented in Egypt Vision 2030, the updated version of which will be launched soon.
Kamali said that the social, economic, and environmental dimensions must be taken into account in the implementation of various projects, in addition to the localization of sustainable development goals in the governorates, praising the role of the Baseera Center in providing data and information in this regard, in addition to the support provided by the United Nations.On achieving the sustainable development goals, Kamali explained that the Egyptian state is working to eradicate poverty as one of the most important goals of sustainable development. The state’s plan to eradicate poverty will be implemented through a strict confrontation of the causes of poverty by providing decent job opportunities and helping citizens to develop their skills in adapting to the requirements of the labor market without relying only on the provision of cash support.Dr. Ahmed Kamali added that Egypt’s steps were quick to localize development indicators in each governorate separately.
“This is what the Baseera Foundation implemented with an accurate scientific methodology in the form of a report that can be updated and renewed according to the new numbers,” Kamali explained.
He noted that the report helps decision-makers to evaluate proposed and implemented projects.The Deputy Minister of Planning stressed that the reports of settling the sustainable development goals in Egypt contribute to providing good planning, stressing Egypt's commitment to achieving the 17 sustainable development goals.Dr. Ahmed Kamali also toured the administrative headquarters of Gharbia Governorate, inspected some units inside the building, and visited the unit of the spatial variable in the governorate, which is the most important unit to which the governorate pays attention during that period, to eliminate the phenomenon of random construction and encroachment on state property.For his part, Dr. Tariq Rahmi, Governor of Gharbia, explained during his speech the steps taken by the governorate based on the report of the Ministry of Planning regarding the settlement of sustainable development goals in the governorate, reviewing the governorate’s executive plan that is scheduled to be activated to achieve the target by 2030. The plan included 11 goals of the UN sustainable development, which are listed according to the local development plans in the governorates of the Republic, including a set of measurable indicators. The plan included (the axes of action, required activities, the entity responsible for implementation, and indicators of success).
Dr. Maged Othman, CEO of the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research "Baseera", pointed out during his speech to the expected impact of the Coronavirus in reducing the target of achieving the sustainable development goals, referring to the efforts of the Egyptian state to work to reduce its effects.During an open discussion, His Eminence Bishop Paula pointed to the importance of educating priests about the goals of sustainable development and their settlement, noting that the church’s vision to deal with the eradication of poverty takes place through a plan aimed at preparing a person capable of production and work, not by giving money or food needs.During her participation, Ms. Najwa Al-Ashery stressed the importance of following up on the implementation of these indicators by the concerned authorities on a periodic and continuous basis to ensure serious implementation and full commitment, according to a specific time plan to achieve the goals on time and to overcome challenges.As for the role of Tanta University; Dr. Hamdi Shaaban emphasized the university's role in the development of the environment and society, explaining that there is an agreement on the part of the university with the governorate in all visions to implement the various presidential initiatives.Shaaban referred to the literacy of 12,525 individuals, thus achieving Tanta University's first place at the level of universities in eliminating illiteracy, in addition to establishing a unit "Able to Differ" to provide services to people of determination.
