The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, reviewed Egypt's experience in implementing the principles of the United Nations Committee of Experts in Public Administration for Effective Governance for Sustainable Development during the "Launching African Countries Reports on Governance" conference held in Nairobi, Kenya.


Sherifa Sherif, Executive Director of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), stated that the conference discussed Egypt's policy in dealing with the repercussions of COVID-19.


Sherif stressed that despite the negative shock to the Egyptian economy due to the pandemic, Egypt was one of the few countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) that recorded positive growth in 2020, according to International Monetary Fund (IMF) reports.Sherif noted that Egypt ranks first in the Middle East and West Asia in taking special measures for women in the face of the repercussions of the virus, as the state has taken 21 measures to support women, and the total number of measures taken by the state to confront the virus is 437.Concerning possible areas of future cooperation with the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), Sherif explained that it consists in organizing joint capacity-building workshops, supporting efforts aimed at institutionalizing the principles in Africa, and developing a toolkit of the United Nations Committee of Experts in Public Administration to apply the principles in the Egyptian context.


 This is in addition to strengthening cooperation in the field of research on governance in Africa and research cooperation in the new scientific journal of the Institute (Governance for Sustainable Development), which the Institute will launch its first issue this month.

During the conference, Dr. Hanan Rizk, Director of the African Development Center at the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), Egypt's experience in applying the principles of the United Nations Committee of Experts in Public Administration with its three axes: effectiveness, accountability, and inclusiveness.

Rizk referred to the Egypt Award for Government Excellence, face-to-face training programs, online capacity building programs, the New Administrative Capital project, the role and objectives of the National Committee to follow up on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Committee of Governance Experts.

 This is in addition to highlighting the Sustainable Development Goals Monitor Dashboard, the National Statistical Report for Monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals, and indicators related to sustainable development.

Rizk also touched on the role of the National Anti-Corruption Committee, the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), the implementation of Share 2030 (Sharek 2030) and the Citizen Plan, the Code of Conduct (2019-2022), in addition to presenting the role of the Equal Opportunities Unit at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, and the Program Guidance at the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development.
