For the second time… “NWFE” energy projects continue to win international awards
“Abydos 2” Solar Power Plant wins African Deal of the Year Award
Dr. Rania Al-Mashat: Consecutive awards reflect the success of the NWFE model as a country platform for coordinating efforts and mobilizing finance to implement priority projects.
Following the Suez wind power plant with a capacity of 1.1 GW winning two international awards in 2025, under the energy pillar of the “NWFE” program, the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation announced that the “Abydos 2” solar power project, implemented by AMEA Power, has won the African Deal of the Year Award as part of the PFI Awards 2025
H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, emphasized that this international recognition reflects the success of the “NWFE” program model as a country platform for coordinating efforts among government entities, the private sector, and international financial institutions. This model enables the mobilization of concessional climate finance and its direction toward strategically prioritized projects that support a just transition to a green economy and foster energy security, in order to implement the National Sustainable Energy Strategy and Egypt’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It also supports the objectives of Egypt Vision 2030 by accelerating the transition to clean energy, boosting green investment, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat highlighted that the structural and regulatory reforms implemented by the government since 2014 have opened the door for significant private-sector participation in renewable energy, which in turn has encouraged international financial institutions to inject investments and concessional financing into these projects. She noted that Egypt’s national energy strategy targets renewable energy to account for around 42% of the electricity mix by 2030, as part of the state’s direction toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources in the power sector, with a vision to increase this share to approximately 60% by 2040.
The “Abydos 2” project represents a clear example of this integration. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund) is participating in financing the project through a loan of USD 37 million, within the framework of a development partnership that helps stimulate private-sector investment and supports the large-scale implementation of clean energy projects.
The project is an advanced model for integrating 1,000 MW of photovoltaic solar power with battery energy storage systems with a capacity of 600 MWh, contributing to enhanced efficiency and flexibility of the national electricity grid and supporting the transition toward a more sustainable and diversified energy mix.
Located in Aswan Governorate in Upper Egypt, the project is expected to supply more than 3 million MWh of clean electricity annually to the national grid, enough to meet the needs of more than 500,000 households, while also reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
It is worth noting that in 2025, the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation announced that the 1.1 GW Suez wind power plant, implemented by a consortium of local and foreign private-sector companies under the energy pillar of the “NWFE” program, had won two international awards. The project received the Infrastructure Deal of the Year Award from African Banker magazine, in addition to the Best Energy Deal in Egypt and Africa award.
