The Sustainable Development Unit at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development represented by Dr. Mona Essam, Head of the Sustainable Development Unit, and First Secretary/ Sherif Daoud, Deputy Head of the Unit, participated recently in the ninth meeting of the Arab Committee to follow up on the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in the Arab region.
The meeting was organized by the Department of Sustainable Development at the General Secretariat of the Arab League, with the participation of representatives from Arab countries and some regional organizations.
The meeting discussed many issues and topics of interest to the Arab region concerning the pursuit of sustainable development goals, the most important of which are the initiative to eradicate hunger in the Arab region, the Arab Network for Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, achieving sustainable development in countries affected by conflict, and the ongoing preparations to organize The Arab Week for Sustainable Development in its fourth edition on the sidelines of the Dubai Expo 2020.
During the meeting, the existing cooperation between the Egyptian government represented by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and the General Secretariat of the Arab League in preparing a report on “Financing Sustainable Development in Egypt” was praised.
The report was prepared under the supervision of Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and United Nations Special Envoy for financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as a prototype to be applied in the Arab countries.
The success of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Arab League, in organizing the side event on “The Challenges of Financing for Development before and after the Corona Virus Crisis” last April on the sidelines of the “Financing for Development” forum, which is organized annually by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, was also commended.
The aforementioned Arab Committee aims to follow up the implementation of the sustainable development goals in the Arab region, as well as coordinate the efforts of Arab countries towards achieving the UN goals, and coordinate with joint Arab action organizations and relevant United Nations specialized agencies.
