17 July 2021

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, held an awareness session on "Sustainable E-waste Management" intending to raise awareness of e-waste management practices and their effects on health and the environment.

Dr. Sherifa El-Sherif, Executive Director NIGSD, explained that the session comes in light of legal procedures and environmental and health requirements for handling and managing hazardous waste, intending to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants resulting from waste combustion.
El-Sherif indicated that the session included a review of the Egyptian state’s experience in the field of recycling, as Egypt launched the first application for electronic waste collection E-Tadweer, which is considered the first national digital platform that supports the supply chains of the recycling industry. The "Sustainable E-Waste Management" awareness session was presented by M/ Hoda Shakra, Director of Industry and External Relations, "Builders of Digital Egypt Initiative" at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The session was chaired by Dr. Heba El-Baz, assistant professor of economics at the Institute-of-National-Planning (INP) who is also acting as director of the Center for Sustainable Development at NIGSD.The session discussed several topics, including the relationship of e-waste to sustainable development, the extent to which they are linked to achieving the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030, the state’s strategy to enhance the added value of waste of all kinds and transform it into benefits and reduce its effects on public health and the environment, and safe e-waste recycling methods.
