“The Egyptian-Japanese partnership has bolstered urban development, sustainability, and investment in human capital,” said H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat.
“Our joint projects, such as the Cairo Metro and renewable energy initiatives, are powerful examples of effective international partnerships,” remarked H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat.
“The Grand Egyptian Museum stands as a testament to our unique cultural collaboration,” noted H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat.
“Expanding cooperation with Japanese institutions to provide greater financial resources for the private sector is key,” emphasized H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat.

H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, met with Ms. Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo, during the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12). Hosted by Cairo from November 4-8 under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and themed “It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities,” the forum facilitated discussions on advancing Egypt-Japan cooperation.

Dr. Al-Mashat welcomed Governor Koike and expressed deep appreciation for her visit, noting the significance of 2024 as the 70th anniversary of the Egyptian-Japanese partnership—an enduring testament to strategic collaboration and friendship.

The meeting centered on development cooperation between the two nations, positioning their partnership as a model of international collaboration that yields mutual benefits. Dr. Al-Mashat highlighted successes in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, emphasizing their strength and sustainability. She also expressed hopes for expanding cooperation into fields like innovation, sustainable development, and technology, aligning with Egypt’s long-term development strategy.

Dr. Al-Mashat underscored that Egypt’s relationship with Japan is one of the most exemplary models of constructive development cooperation that supports sustainable growth. She shared plans to continue this productive collaboration through new infrastructure and capacity-building projects, along with expanded financial mechanisms to bolster the private sector.

She acknowledged Japan’s long-standing role as a dependable partner in Egypt’s socio-economic development, with significant contributions across infrastructure, education, healthcare, and renewable energy sectors. Japan’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East and Africa through trilateral cooperation were also highlighted.

Dr. Al-Mashat reiterated the ministry’s commitment to fostering partnerships with friendly nations. She stressed that trilateral cooperation is a vital tool for technology transfer, capacity building, and fostering development in emerging economies. Egypt is dedicated to enhancing its position as a regional and international leader in development collaboration.

Key projects that embody the Egyptian-Japanese partnership include the Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo Metro Line 4, the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), the comprehensive health insurance system, renewable energy projects, and the expansion of Borg El Arab International Airport.

Governor Koike expressed her gratitude for Egypt’s warm welcome and participation in WUF12, reinforcing the deep-rooted and strong ties between the two countries.
