Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Participates in  Launch of Green Urban Strategy

We are working to increase the proportion of green projects in the investment plan and implementing several programs with international partners to enhance urban sustainability.

H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, participated in the launch of the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities' “National Framework Strategy for Green Urbanism and building in Egypt”.

This event took place during her participation in the 12th session of the World Urban Forum, held in Cairo from 4–8 November 2024, under the patronage of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The event was also attended by Eng. Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, May Abdel-Hamid, CEO of the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund, and the representative of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

In H.E.’s speech, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat stated that the strategy being launched today is a significant part of the country's comprehensive efforts to enhance the sustainability of cities and transition towards a green economy.

H.E. Minister Al-Mashat highlighted that the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation is working to increase the percentage of green projects in the economic and social development plan. This reflects the government's commitment to supporting projects that contribute to sustainability and inclusive development. These projects are designed to have a holistic impact, involving all sectors of society and taking into account environmental aspects by focusing on green and renewable initiatives. All of these efforts aim to address the complex challenges we face both nationally and internationally, and to create sustainable solutions that improve the environment and contribute to prosperity for all.

H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized that each of us plays a vital role in this journey, whether working on national projects or participating in international efforts in cooperation with development partners such as the World Bank and the European Union. H.E. noted that while some of these projects are in their early stages or advanced phases, the collaboration of efforts as partners is crucial to promoting economic growth and offering a new model of development that aligns with contemporary needs. Working with development partners gives us the opportunity to exchange experiences and coordinate efforts to achieve tangible results that benefit everyone.

The Minister also reaffirmed that financing is a critical element in achieving our goals. No project can be realized without the necessary funding to ensure its sustainability and effective implementation. H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat pointed out the importance of funding in improving the daily lives of citizens by providing the necessary support to cities and organizations. This includes financing projects that contribute to improving living standards, developing infrastructure, and enhancing the services provided to citizens.

H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat mentioned the significance of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, which will be held in Seville, Spain, next June. The conference will discuss how to use financing to achieve sustainable development, especially in cities facing major challenges. She emphasized that the government believes development cannot be achieved without making our cities more sustainable and in line with our new commitments as a nation in our efforts to combat climate change and preserve the environment. H.E. Minister Al-Mashat also noted that Egypt has updated its Nationally Determined Contributions, particularly in the field of renewable energy, marking an important step towards achieving environmental goals. These efforts are part of a comprehensive vision aimed at improving the quality of life for both current and future generations.

H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat added that the government is working on a number of projects, including several initiatives focused on sustainability. These projects include water treatment and distribution using modern methods and renewable energy projects such as solar and wind power. These initiatives aim to improve the lives of citizens directly by providing clean water and affordable energy, contributing to the development of cities and making them more livable.

H.E. Minister Al-Mashat also referred to the ongoing Green Cities program implemented with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which aims to support the green transition in Egyptian cities. This program is being carried out in Cairo, Alexandria, and 6th of October City, and represents one of the key projects in Egypt's partnership with the bank.

In conclusion, H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat stressed the importance of partnership between national and international entities to achieve development goals. H.E. emphasized that the success of the country in achieving its national objectives must be accompanied by a commitment to making a meaningful contribution to global progress. She also highlighted the responsibility of citizens and individuals in society to work together to make the world more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.
