01 June 2024

Dr. Sherifa Sherif, Executive Director of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), inaugurated a workshop on Egypt's performance in international governance indicators in collaboration with the Economic Governance Project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The workshop was attended by experts from academia, the government sector, the private sector, and civil society.

During the session, Dr. Sherifa Sherif highlighted Egypt's performance report in international governance indicators prepared by the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, emphasizing that governance is a key driver and tool for achieving the goals of Egypt's Vision 2030. She noted that the report, issued for the fourth consecutive year, aims to illustrate Egypt's position in international governance indicators and includes recommendations for improving Egypt's status in these indicators. Dr. Sherif also mentioned the National Governance Index, which aims to monitor performance and issue an annual governance report, serving as a supportive tool for development goals, developed collaboratively with all state entities.

Dr. Omar Abdullah, Head of the Economic Governance Project Working Group, highlighted the close cooperation between the project and the institute in various activities aimed at improving Egypt's performance in different international indicators, emphasizing the importance of the workshop in assessing Egypt's position in international governance indicators and national efforts to improve these conditions.

Dr. Khaled Zakaria, Economic Governance Project Consultant, stressed the importance of Egypt's performance report in international governance indicators as a revealing account of developments in Egypt's performance in these indicators. He explained that the workshop falls within the framework of cooperation between the institute and the Economic Governance Project funded by the United States Agency for International Development, aiming to address several important issues in light of the results of international indicators, providing specific indicators that give a more realistic view of Egypt's situation in these indicators and the necessary measures to improve these conditions.

Dr. Asmaa Azzat, Director of the Institute's Governance Center, outlined the highlights of Egypt's classification report in governance indicators 23/2024, issued by the institute, highlighting the emergence of the governance concept and the principles of good governance, which include participation, rule of law, transparency, accountability, responsiveness, justice, inclusivity, efficiency, effectiveness, and consensus. She emphasized the importance of monitoring Egypt's performance in governance indicators and the role of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development in this regard. Dr. Azzat also provided a brief overview of Egypt's performance report in governance indicators, which includes 14 indicators issued by 11 international and regional institutions, revealing improvements in Egypt's performance in global innovation, positive peace, global soft power, economic freedom, and governance indicators such as freedom of expression and accountability.

Dr. Alya Aref, Institute Advisor and Director of the Strategic Planning Unit, discussed the evolution of the governance concept and its underlying pillars, emphasizing that governance can be considered a means to achieve sustainable development. She noted that the report provided a comprehensive view of Egypt's performance in governance indicators from various aspects, formulating an action plan consisting of four main objectives: accountability, transparency, and anti-corruption; administrative reform and digital transformation; participation, inclusion, and rights; and innovation and competitiveness support. These objectives are divided according to the timeframe and the responsible entities for implementation.
