H.E. Dr. Hala El Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, outlined the targets for the water and food security sector in the fiscal year 2024/2025 plan during the discussion of the Economic and Social Development Plan for the fiscal year 24/2025 at a meeting of the Senate’s Committee on Financial, Economic, and Investment Affairs. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Hani Ser El-Din, President of the Senate, and attended by Dr. Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and members of the council.

Dr. Hala El Said discussed enhancing the role of public investment in ensuring water and food security, explaining that to address water scarcity, there will be an expansion in seawater desalination plants with a capacity of 434,000 m3/day, in addition to adding new agricultural areas and expanding horizontally and vertically in agriculture. There will also be a project to rehabilitate and line irrigation canals, as well as securing electricity supply for agricultural reclamation projects in “New Delta, South Valley, Beni Suef, and Minya” areas, electricity supply for the Toshka and East Owainat areas, and electricity supply for wells in Sinai development clusters. Furthermore, there will be improvements in agricultural, animal, and fish production efficiency, including in East Owainat farms and sugar cane seedling production stations in Aswan, and the automation of the agricultural landholding system with 400,000 smart cards.
