Egypt implements 585 development projects worth EGP 35.3 bn in Cairo

Projects aim to achieve SDGs, eradicate hunger, and ensure a healthy life and quality education, says Hala El-Said
Egypt has completed 585 development projects worth a total investment cost of EGP 35.3 bn in Cairo governorate, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said said on Sunday.
The projects cover six sectors, namely: housing, electricity, transportation, irrigation, local development, and education.The results were revealed in the eighth edition of the “Citizen Follow-up in the Governorates” report for fiscal years (FY) 2018/19- 2019/20, issued by the ministry.
The report said that the state has worked towards achieving the second sustainable development goal (SDG), “Eradicating hunger, providing food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture”.
In this regard, the state has implemented six projects in the water resources and irrigation, for EGP 81.5 million, including the rehabilitation of the Hajar and Khashab Canals in Helwan.
Concerning the fourth SDG, ensuring a quality education that is equitable and inclusive and promotes learning opportunities throughout life for all, the report stated that 95 projects in the pre-university education sector, at EGP 665 million, have been completed beside the establishment, replacement, and expansion of 2139 classrooms at all educational levels.
As part of the sixth goal, “Ensure the availability of drinking water and sanitation for all and manage it sustainably”, the sewage improvement project on Al-Khalifa Al-Mamoun Street, a sewage plant (14, 16), and a water line in New Cairo have been completed.Moreover, expansions were done to the sewage system Helwan El-Balad.
The report also noted that, for the seventh goal which covers universal access to modern, regular, and sustainable energy services at an affordable cost, the construction of the second steam station at the South Helwan Power Plant (capacity 650 megawatts), the 180-degree Zahraa Maadi / South Helwan line. km, and the Manshiet Nasser transformer station (495 MVA capacity), and the expansion of the Sabtieh transformer station (added capacity 125 MVA) has been completed.
Furthermore, the report indicated the implementation of 73 projects within the local development programs (electricity and lighting), at EGP 186 million were completed.These projects resulted in the lighting of 1,450 streets, the installation, replacement, and renewal of about 23,000 columns, the laying of new cables with a length of 295 km, and the provision of 142,000 lighting equipment and tasks.
Regarding the ninth SDG, “Establishing resilient infrastructure, stimulating inclusive sustainable industrialization, and encouraging innovation”, the report explanted that the first part of the fourth phase of the third subway line and the duplication of the subway line (Al-Marj - Al-Marj Al-Jadida) has been completed.
A total of 128 projects within the local development programs, including paving roads, bridges, and tunnels, were also completed, for EGP 2bn. This has resulted in developed and improved roads and streets with a length of 431 km using, in addition to the construction and development of 26 bridges.
Concerning the eleventh SDG, “making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”, the report indicated the implementation of some projects to develop slums including Asmarat 3 to provide 7440 housing units and remove the danger from 7 areas as well as the establishment of about 41,000 social housing units in the cities of Badr and 15 May.
The report indicated the completion of the implementation of 101 projects, within the local development programs (Security, Traffic, and Firefighting), at EGP 1.3 billion, including the development and upgrading of 59 administrative buildings, and the connection of facilities to about 18.000 housing units in Asmarat (3.2, 1).
Regarding the 13th SDG, “Taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts”, the report indicated that 24 projects were completed within the local development programs (improving the environment), for EGP 73 million, which resulted in the completion of the development of the Al-Basateen and May 15 slaughterhouses, and the supply of 1390 prepared for the development of 7 public parks, and the development of Sohag market in Heliopolis.
El-Said asserted that Cairo governorate will regain much of its glory during the coming period, as many major projects are being planned in the sectors of transport, tourism, antiquities, services, and facilities, in parallel with the great progress in the new cities and the New Administrative Capital.
