The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development convened a strategic meeting with Cairo University and the Egyptian Knowledge Bank to discuss the progress and future plans for the Sustainable Universities initiative. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Mohamed Alaa, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Office and Head of the Human Rights Unit, aimed to review the latest developments and outline the strategic direction of the initiative.


Key stakeholders from the ministry included Dr. Tarek Shawki, General Supervisor of the initiative and former Minister of Education and Technical Education, and Dr. Mahmoud El Said, Vice President of Cairo University for Graduate Studies and Research Affairs. Also present were Ola Lawrence, the university’s research track coordinator for the initiative, and Mohamed Awad, the initiative’s coordinator at the Ministry of Planning.


During the meeting, Dr. Mohamed Alaa emphasized the importance of the Sustainable Universities initiative in promoting research dedicated to issues such as the right to development and youth empowerment. Dr. Tarek Shawki highlighted the need for active involvement of university students and underscored the significance of incorporating a research component within the initiative.


Dr. Mahmoud El Said showcased Cairo University’s historical role in fostering scientific research and its successful experiences in establishing reputable scientific journals. Ola Lawrence highlighted the role of such initiatives in enriching scientific research aimed at addressing development challenges.


Mohamed Awad outlined the core objectives and performance indicators of the Sustainable Universities initiative and discussed expectations for its inaugural year.


The meeting concluded with a commitment from all parties to further collaboration and to work towards the successful implementation of the Sustainable Universities initiative, aligning with national development goals.
