23 February 2024
Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, chaired the meeting of the Technical Secretariat of the National Committee for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals in Egypt, alongside Dr. Mona Essam, Assistant Minister for Sustainable Development, and representatives from all pertinent authorities and ministries. The meeting aimed to deliberate on the updated Egypt Vision 2030 and the national review of the Arab Vision Document 2045.
The gathering scrutinized the updated Egypt Vision 2030, the localization of sustainable development goals at the governorate level, monitoring sustainable development indicators according to international standards, as well as the national report on progress in the African Agenda 2063. Additionally, it addressed the Arab document for the year 2045, national feedback on the document, and Egypt's response.
Dr. Ahmed Kamali emphasized expanding the national committee's representation beyond the government to include the private sector and civil society. He highlighted the explicit link between strategic goals, the UN's 17 goals, and the African Agenda 2063 in the updated Egypt Vision 2030.
Dr. Kamali stressed the imperative of achieving sustainable development goals nationally, underscoring provincial efforts to enhance and expedite national sustainable development goals. He noted that these reports stimulate positive competition among governorates and aid in identifying developmental gaps for more precise solutions.
Regarding the national review of the Arab Vision Document 2045, titled "On the Path to Achieving Hope through Thought, Will, and Action by 2045," Kamali emphasized the necessity of a national review involving all relevant entities to gather recommendations. The document comprises six pillars, including security, justice, innovation, prosperity, sustainable development, diversity, vitality, cultural, and civilizational renewal.
Dr. Mona Essam highlighted the meeting's importance in discussing recent developments, particularly the completion of the organized framework for sustainable development in Egypt with the issuance of the updated Egypt Vision 2030. She emphasized the ministry's current focus on achieving real coherence between Egypt Vision 2030 and all other sectoral and local strategies and plans, through a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system.
Essam mentioned that Egypt's updated vision comprises three levels, including governing principles, six strategic objectives, and 93 strategic indicators, subject to constant review to accommodate new indicators and changes in targets. Furthermore, the updated vision includes seven enablers as tools to accelerate goal achievement.
Dr. Mona Essam mentioned that the ministry is finalizing the second edition of reports on localizing sustainable development goals in governorates, focusing primarily on statistics and aligning each governorate with sustainable development goals. Additionally, efforts are underway to launch an interactive data dashboard for real-time data provision.
She highlighted the ministry's initiatives for cooperation with the African continent, including the Cairo Center for Localizing Sustainable Development Goals and the "Decent Life for Resilient Africa" initiative to address climate change challenges.
