Egypt's Sustainable Development Achievements Presented to Parliament Committee

In a session before the Planning and Budget Committee at the Parliament , Dr. Mona Essam, Assistant Minister for Sustainable Development, presented a comprehensive report showcasing Egypt's strides in sustainable development. The meeting, held on January 3, 2024, was attended by key figures, including H.E. Dr. Hala El Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development.
Dr. Hala El Said emphasized the significance of Egypt's structured approach to sustainable development, anchored in Egypt's Vision 2030 and the National Committee overseeing the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
She invited Dr. Mona Essam to provide insights into the sustainable development initiatives within the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.
During the meeting, Dr. Mona Essam reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to realizing "Egypt Vision 2030" by ensuring coherence with sectoral and local strategies.
She highlighted the coordination mechanisms established between the Sustainable Development Unit at the Ministry of Planning and national entities, comprising five sustainable development units and approximately 40 contact points across different entities.
The objective of these mechanisms is to maintain alignment with "Egypt Vision" and integrate it into national plans, ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation of progress.
Dr. Mona Essam outlined the ministry's efforts to foster sustainable communication methods with national contact points, promoting a cohesive planning process nationwide.
The Assistant Minister delved into the ministry's tasks, including updating the national agenda for sustainable development in response to changing economic, social, and environmental conditions. Additionally, she emphasized the integration of Egypt Vision 2030 into national plans and programs and the collection of necessary data for national, regional, and international reports.
Dr. Mona Essam reported Egypt's voluntary submission of three national reports to the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York in 2016, 2018, and 2021. Notably, Egypt was among the top 10 countries globally to submit its third voluntary report in 2021, and she confirmed Egypt's intention to submit its fourth report in 2024.
Regarding the national reports for monitoring the implementation of Agenda 2063, Dr. Mona Essam clarified that Egypt submitted reports to the African Union in 2019, 2021, and 2023, demonstrating progress in achieving the goals of Agenda 2063. She highlighted the significance of the current year's report, which evaluates the first ten-year implementation plan and formulates the second ten-year implementation plan for Agenda 2063.
Dr. Mona Essam underscored the role of the Sustainable Development Unit in monitoring indicators at international, regional, national, and local levels. The unit is launching an electronic platform in collaboration with various national entities to monitor all sustainable development indicators, including those from Agenda 2030, Agenda 2063, Egypt Vision 2030, and Localization Indicators.
Collaborating with the United Nations in Egypt, the Ministry of Planning is actively enhancing national capacities in monitoring and tracking Sustainable Development Goal indicators. As part of this effort, they initiated the project "Enhancing National Capacities in Monitoring and Tracking the Fourth Goal related to Quality Education" as a pilot goal.
