On Cop28 Sidelines: Egypt’s National Initiative for Smart Green Projects holds a session on engaging youth in localizing sustainability

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, represented by the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects, held a session entitled “Involving youth in localizing sustainability through the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects.”
The workshop witnessed the participation of Mahmoud Mohieldin, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and the climate pioneer for the Egyptian presidency of Cop27.
The session was moderated by Eng. Khaled Mustafa, a member of the initiative’s national judging committee, in the presence of several distinguished participants, and the participation of the owners of the initiative’s winning projects.
The session took place on the sidelines of the Youth, Children, Education, and Skills Day within the activities of COP28, held in the UAE during the period from November 30 to December 12.
During the session, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin said that the primary goal of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects is to find real solutions and raise awareness of the importance of climate action and digital transformation among the Egyptian people, government agencies, and the private sector.
Mohieldin stressed the importance of bridging the gap between financing bodies and project owners by highlighting projects with bankability.
Mohieldin also pointed out that the work of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects is in line with the UN SDG 17 -Revitalizing the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
Mohieldin stressed the importance of providing financing opportunities, strategic partnerships, and technical support, at the national and international levels, for many participating projects through their partners from international organizations, led by the United Nations organizations operating in Egypt.
The session was attended by Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Cairo, Matt Grangaard Lund, Technical Officer at the Department of Green Jobs and Just Transitions at the International Labor Organization (ILO), Alia El-Sherif, Head of the Planning and International Cooperation Sector at the Enterprise Development Agency, Brian Dean, Director of Energy Transition SEforAll, and Omar Samra, adventurer, and entrepreneur.
