Main / Media / News / On Cop28 sidelines: Egypt’s Planning Ministry organizes an event entitled “The Future of Decent Life for a Climate Resilient Africa Initiative toward the Africa we want in 2063”

04 December 2023

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development organized an event entitled “The Future of Decent Life for a Climate Resilient Africa Initiative toward the Africa we want in 2063” in the presence of H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said, Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development.

The event highlighted the importance of the initiative for the continent in light of the development and climate challenges it faces.

The event took place during Cop28 which is currently being held starting from November 30 to December 12, 2023, in Dubai.

During her speech, Dr. Hala El-Said said that all the previous editions from Cop focused primarily on advancing climate action.

Therefore, “The Future of Decent Life for a Climate Resilient Africa Initiative toward the Africa we want in 2063” event aims to discuss and exchange views on the future of Africa.

It (The Event)__also aims to coordinate efforts and establish effective partnerships to work to achieve the aspirations of the African peoples to have a brighter future, and to overcome the negative effects imposed by the effects of climate change, according to El-Said.

She further stressed the importance of adhering to the 'Leave no one behind' (LNOB) principle which requires finding innovative solutions to implement international pledges.

El-Said explained that African citizens are suffering from the serious negative effects resulting from climate change, which clearly exceed their ability to adapt, especially those who live in villages and rural areas.

“Those who live in such area (rural areas) survive lack of access to basic services like education, health care, clean water and electricity,” she said.

El-Said emphasized the Egyptian state’s keen to localize UN SDGs and improving the quality of life of the Egyptian citizen.

The Egyptian state has exerted tremendous efforts to reach localization of UN SDGs such as launching the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects.

It (The Egyptian State) also launched the “Decent Life” initiative that works to improve the quality of life of citizens in Egypt’s most vulnerable communities, according to El-Said.

Moreover, El-Said reviewed through her speech delivered during the event the success achieved by the “Decent Life” initiative.

In a related context, El-Said explained that the “Decent Life for Climate Resilient Africa” initiative is a comprehensive platform that brings together various tools and knowledge across the continent to achieve the goal of the initiative, which is consistent with the Africa 2063 Agenda.

The aforementioned initiative was launched within the activities of (CoP27), in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and many African countries.

She also explained that through work on the initiative, a set of priority areas have been identified .

These areas will serve as an indicative action plan that will be implemented by the company with African countries and relevant development partners.

El-Said concluded her speech by emphasizing the importance of communication, partnership, hard work, and continuous and constructive coordination between relevant actors and stakeholders to accelerate development paths in Africa.
