Main / Media / News / The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development launches a workshop on applying The DEGURBA approach in Egypt

14 November 2023

Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, represented by Dr. Heba Mogheib, Supervisor of the Regional Planning Sector at the Ministry, held the 2nd technical workshop to train 25 employees of the state administrative apparatus participating in the first introductory and technical workshop.

The workshop witnessed the participation of Dr. Mona Essam, Assistant to the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Maghrabi, Supervisor of the Human Development Sector at the Ministry.

The workshop was also attended by Dr. Nevin Mohamed Awad, Head of Business and General Administration, Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMS), and representatives of the Regional Office of Arab States/Egypt Office, UN-Habitat, and the European Commission.

During her speech, Dr. Heba Mogheib highlighted the importance of the workshop and the necessity of linking its outcomes to local development efforts in Egypt and identifying the strengths and shortcomings in the investment plan decision-making process.

Mogheib also reviewed the purpose of the second workshop and its importance in resuming work on implementing the “DEGURBA” approach to the degree of urbanization in Egypt.

Mogheib shed light on the challenges facing the Arab Republic of Egypt, explaining that the workshop is important in building capacity and preparing qualified cadres through practical and technical training at the expense of the indicators of SDG 11 [ Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable] as well as the indicators of SDG 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

The 1st preliminary and technical workshop on DEGURBA resulted in the formation of a qualified work team of those involved in the state’s administrative apparatus who, with their capabilities and experience, were able to produce a national population network and the DEGURBA classification, which shows the distribution of urban areas throughout the country.
