Main / Media / News / NIGSD, OECD organize a workshop on the “Citizen’s Charter”

03 November 2023

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, held a workshop on the “Citizen’s Charter” in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

During her speech at the workshop, Dr. Sherifa Sharif, Executive Director of NIGSD, hailed the role of OECD in strengthening the role of NIGSD, whether at the national level or the Middle East level.

Sherif pointed out that the Citizen's Charter is one of the activities of the country program that is implemented in cooperation with the organization.

The workshop aims to present success stories and benefit from successful international experiences in implementing the Citizen Charter, as this Charter is applied in institutions and service bodies related to the citizens.

Sherif also stressed that the Citizen’s Charter includes the rights and duties of the citizen towards the service, and also includes the correct methods of complaint. It represents a significant part of governance tools, as the Citizen Charter works to implement transparency and accountability, which are among the basic pillars of governance.

Sherif highlighted NIGSD’s role in monitoring and evaluating Egypt’s performance in international governance indicators, as the Institute issues an annual report on Egypt’s status in international governance indicators.

The report also includes a set of recommendations that help improve Egypt’s ranking in these indicators, pointing to the initiatives undertaken by the Institute, including the “Be an Ambassador” initiative for sustainable development, the “Green Minds” initiative, and the “Salah, Omnia and Development Goals” initiative.

These initiatives aim to spread awareness among children and youth about the Sustainable Development Goals.

For her part, Dr. Asmaa Ezzat, Director of the Institute's Governance Center, referred to the country program that is being implemented in cooperation between the Egyptian government and OECD to improve the economic performance of the Egyptian state in various fields.

The governance pillar is one of the main pillars of this program.

NIGSD coordinates the projects that fall under the governance pillar of the program, including the project to raise awareness about the Citizen’s Charter and its role in enhancing governance.

The workshop included several topics, including presenting the main successes and challenges of the Citizen’s Charter experience in Madrid, implementing the Citizen’s Charter in MENA, the role of the Citizen’s Charter in promoting transparency and accountability, in addition to reviewing Egyptian efforts to prepare and raise awareness of the Citizen’s Charter.
