The Steering Committee of the “A Decent Life for an Africa Resilient to Climate Change” initiative organizes its 1st board meeting

The Sustainable Development Unit of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development held the first meeting of the Steering Committee of the Egyptian Presidency of the Climate Change Conference (COP27) initiative, “A Decent Life for an Africa Resilient to Climate Change”, at the headquarters of the North Africa Regional Office of the United Cities and Local Governments Organization (UCLG-NARO) in Cairo.
Dr. Mona Essam - Assistant Minister of Planning and Economic Development for Sustainable Development Affairs, the work team of the Sustainable Development Unit in the Ministry, and a representative of the Egyptian Presidency of the Climate Change Conference in the Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in the meeting.
Ambassador Mohamed Hegazy - Head of the UCLG North Africa Regional Office, Ambassador Seyni Nafo, AAI (The African Adaptation Initiative), and Ms. Reham Youssef - Director of the Policy and Partnerships Team at the United Nations Development Office in Cairo (UNDP) also participated.
The meeting sought to present the steps that have been taken during the past period since H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said- Minister of Planning and Economic Development launched the pioneering Egyptian initiative “A Decent Life for an Africa Resilient to Climate Change” on the sidelines of Cop 27 that took place last November in Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh.
The committee also discussed ways to work towards activating the initiative during the coming period in cooperation with partners from countries and other international and regional organizations, most notably the continued development of the indicative implementation paper as a living document that must take into account the development requirements of various African countries.
The meeting focused on the importance of expanding the circle of partners and friends of the initiative and engaging with them effectively during the coming period, including African countries, development organizations, donors, and non-governmental organizations interested in the areas of work of the initiative.
The committee also touched on the issue of preparations and arrangements related to the initiative’s organization of an event in the Egyptian pavilion on the sidelines of the activities of the Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, scheduled to be held during the period from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
