11 October 2023

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD) - the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development - launched the training activities of the first phase of the training program “She is for Sustainable Development” for the women of the Esna Center in Luxor Governorate, in cooperation with the EFG Hermes Foundation and its pioneering initiative, “Green Footprint.”

Dr. Sherifa Sherif, Executive Director of NIGSD, indicated that the training program “She is for Sustainable Development” comes within the framework of the “Green Footprint” initiative.

The first phase of the training program targets 50 women from Upper Egypt, to train on rooftop gardening.

The program includes several topics, including the principles of sustainable development and its applications, climate change and environmental preservation, agriculture in cities, and its relationship to sustainable development, in addition to a practical part on how to plant rooftops.

Sherif added that the expected outcomes of the program are to spread awareness of the importance of sustainable development and its applications through women in Upper Egypt, raise awareness of the optimal exploitation of resources, and recycle waste, in addition to preparing capable women cadres trained to plant rooftops.

For her part, Hanaa Helmy, CEO of the EFG Foundation for Social Development, explained that the first phase of the initiative focuses on educating and training women, out of her belief in their ability to lead change in societies.

It is noteworthy that the first phase of the training program “She is for Sustainable Development” was implemented over three days, with a total of 18 training hours.

The program witnessed the presence of  Engineer Omar Al-Deeb, a graduate of the first batch of the “Be an Ambassador” initiative and founder of the “Shajarha” )Plant It) initiative.

This comes within the stages of implementing the “Green Footprint” initiative of the IFG Foundation for Social Development, which aims to create an economic model with environmental and social returns, while including digital transformation and financial inclusion, which can be replicated in every village and hamlet in Egypt towards a smart, green future.

The Green Footprint Initiative of the EFG Foundation for Social Development won first place in the Luxor Governorate in the second session of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects in the category of non-profit projects.
