The Minister of Planning and Economic Development discusses cooperation with the UN Deputy Secretary-General
22 July 2023
H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, met with Ms. Amina Mohamed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
This is on the sidelines of its participation in the High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2023, which is being held in New York under the slogan "Accelerating recovery from Covid-19 and fully implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels."
During the meeting, El-Said asserted Egypt's commitment to achieving the sustainable development goals, noting the progress made by the state in this regard, and that Egypt is currently focusing on localizing the sustainable development goals at the governorate level, as 27 reports have been launched to localize the sustainable development goals in the governorates in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund.
These reports document the progress and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in each governorate. Cooperation has also been made with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to support 3 Egyptian governorates - as a first stage - Fayoum, Beheira, and Port Said in developing the first voluntary local reviews (VLRs), which helps local governments to share the progress made in achieving the SDGs in a participatory manner.
El-Said also referred to the importance of financing development, supporting developed and medium-developed countries on this issue, and reforming the global financial system.
The Minister of Planning and Economic Development added that medium-growth countries, including Egypt, have been able, despite global challenges, to make remarkable progress, stressing that the upcoming Summit on Sustainable Development should set steps for developed countries to support medium- and developing countries.
