31 May 2023

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, represented by Dr. Mona Essam, Assistant Minister for Sustainable Development Affairs, participated in the international conference “Net Zero Emissions” under the auspices of the Prime Minister, which was organized by the Green Building Council of Egypt in cooperation with the American University in Cairo. The discussions and sessions of the conference included topics of climate change, reducing emissions, sustainability of resources, raising awareness of environmental issues and their impact on various aspects of life, and improving the quality of life of citizens.

During a session entitled "Sustainable Communities and Sustainable Buildings - Case Studies", Dr. Mona Essam reviewed the "A decent life for an Africa resilient in the face of climate change" initiative, which was launched on the side-lines of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (CoP27) hosted by Egypt. in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022, stressing the importance of the initiative in transferring experiences between various African countries with the aim of achieving the main goal of this initiative, which is to improve the quality of life in 30% of the poorest and most vulnerable villages to climate change by 2030, which supports efforts to confront the phenomenon Climate change and accelerates implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) plans.

Essam referred to the steps to work with the Egyptian initiative "A Decent Life", which is being implemented by a group of ministries and institutions to alleviate the burdens of citizens in the most needy communities in Egyptian villages, by relying on the implementation of a number of service and development activities, pointing to the United Nations' inclusion of the initiative among international best practices because it is specific. verifiable, time-bound, and measurable, and works to achieve many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Hence, it is possible to benefit from the Egyptian initiative "A Decent Life" as a pioneering example that can be applied in African countries in line with the aspirations and goals of Africa's Agenda 2063.

Essam also noted that the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has made many efforts since the launch of the initiative on the side-lines of CoP27, including a series of consultations with the initiative's partners in order to accelerate its activation, in addition to the Ministry's Sustainable Development Unit team working on a guide that includes many steps (planning, implementation , and follow-up and evaluation) that can be taken in pursuit of the main goal of the initiative and the improvement of the standard of living of citizens in the most needy areas and the implementation of the largest number of green villages in many African countries.

Concluding her speech, Dr. Mona Essam emphasized that the participation of all relevant stakeholders and the activation and implementation of the initiative on the ground is essential to building a success story for our African continent.
