General Coordinator of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects Ambassador Hisham Badr who is acting also as Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 2nd round of the Initiative confirmed that the 2nd round of the initiative comes within the framework of the intensive national efforts under the auspices of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to achieve the SDGs by preserving the environment, improving the quality of life and confronting the problems of climate change.


The aforementioned statements came during a conference held by the Cairo Governorate today, in the presence of Major General Khaled Abdel-Al, Governor of Cairo, and Engineer Khaled Mustafa, Permanent Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, to review the implementation steps and explain the mechanisms of participation in the second round of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects.

At the beginning of his speech at the conference, Ambassador Hisham Badr appreciated the efforts of the Cairo Governorate, led by Major General Khaled Abdel-Al, made during the first round of the initiative and its success in achieving its main goal, which is spreading awareness of the importance of dealing with climate change issues.


He further stressed that the Cairo Governorate has led an unprecedented major campaign among the rest governorates to introduce the initiative and raise awareness of it.

Ambassador Hisham Badr stated that the conference comes within the framework of awareness sessions on the candidacy mechanisms that the initial management is keen to hold in all governorates before closing the door for candidacy for the second round at the end of May 2023 through the initiative’s website www.sgg.eg.

Badr stressed that the initiative provides practical solutions to climate change problems through participating projects, which represent all governorates and include all categories.


He explained that the Cairo governorate was one of the governorates that submitted the most projects in the first round of the initiative. He called on the rest of the Republic's governorates to participate in the competition and participation.




The General Coordinator of the National Initiative for Smart and Green Projects indicated that the initiative provided the first database of smart and green projects. This database includes more than 6,300 projects.

Badr pointed out that the European Bank adopted 6 projects in the first round of the initiative, the World Bank supported two projects, in addition to FAO support for two other projects, and the United Nations for 3 projects, as well as projects supported by Egyptian banks and various companies, which confirms the importance of creating partnerships.

For his part, Major General Khaled Abdel-Al, Governor of Cairo, explained that the conference comes as a continuation of the efforts of the state and Cairo Governorate in raising awareness of the national initiative for smart green projects, which Cairo Governorate had the lead in dealing with during the first session, as the number of projects that applied for the initiative on the land of Cairo Governorate reached 949.


Cairo Governor affirmed Cairo Governorate's support for everyone who participates in this pioneering initiative with a green and smart project to maximize state resources. In addition, Cairo Governorate supports the state's plan for digital transformation.


The governorate aims to attract the necessary investments to realize and implement these projects on Cairo's land, according to Cairo’s governor.

The Governor of Cairo appreciated the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development's efforts in supporting this initiative. He called on all executive bodies and individuals to unite and work hard for the success of the national initiative for innovative green projects.


Engineer Khaled Mustafa, Permanent Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, stressed the importance of the governorates’ role in raising awareness of the initiative’s goals and purpose, stressing the idea of comprehensiveness, compatibility, and partnership between all segments of society to confront the effects of climate change.


Mustafa indicated the international community's readiness to support pilot projects that provide practical solutions to environmental problems and climate change. Therefore, one of the main objectives of the initiative is to localize sustainable development goals in all governorates.
