Egypt’s Minister of Planning urges immediate measures to confront climate risks

Main / Media / News / Egypt’s Minister of Planning urges immediate measures to confront climate risks

19 April 2023

Egypt’s Planning and Economic Development Minister, Dr. Hala El-Said underlined the importance of immediate measures to confront climate risks.

She said governments should collaborate to transition to a low-carbon economy and green national investment plans.

She made the remarks on Wednesday 19/4/2023 during a side event organized by her ministry in tandem with the United Nations Development Program and the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment.

The event was held on the sidelines of the annual Financing for Development (FfD) Forum meeting, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

She said climate change poses a grave danger to humanity, noting that Africa contributes only 6 percent to global carbon emissions.

She noted that Egypt launched the environment sustainability standards guide in 2019 to realize a quantum leap in the role played by the government and the private sector. This will accelerate the transition to a green economy.

She added that green projects would represent 40 percent of 2022-2023 public investments.

She also referred to Egypt's launch of an initiative to green national investment plans in Africa and developing countries. This was on the fringes of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27. This was hosted in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh last year.
