Main / Media / News / For the third year in a row:NIGSD issues the annual report on "Egypt's classification in WGI of 2022/2023"

30 March 2023

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, issued the annual report on "Egypt's Classification in The Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) 2022/2023".

H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and Chair of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development Board of Trustees confirmed that improving Egypt's position in governance indicators is one of the Institute's most important priorities.

El-Said pointed out that the first step to achieve this is to follow up and analyze Egypt's current situation and its development in the various governance and competitiveness indicators.

El-Said indicated that the third annual report of NIGSD to follow up on Egypt's performance in international indicators aims to track changes in Egypt's status and position on various indicators, in addition to enhancing its global competitiveness and sustainability of its economic performance.

Dr. Hala El-Said confirmed that Egypt's performance is moving upward in the indicators that assess peace, competition, and digitization regarding grades and ranks.

Concerning peace, Egypt performed well on the peace index. This evaluates the factors that promote peace in a particular country, according to El-Said.

Moreover, Egypt's ranking improved by 34 ranks compared to 2021 results in The Global Sustainable Competitiveness Index (GSCI). This measures the ability to generate and maintain inclusive wealth without compromising future viability or increasing current wealth.

El-Said explained that the Egyptian state has implemented many measures to promote digitization in the public sector. This improved Egypt's performance in the government technology maturity index and its sub-indicators in 2022.

This indicator evaluates the digital transformation process in the public sector to enhance government services provided to citizens efficiently, transparently, and simply.

Dr. Sherifa Sherif, Executive Director of NIGSD, explained that the report "Egypt's Classification in The Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) 2022/2023" is based on analyzing the successful approach taken by the Egyptian government to impose the rule of law.

The report also includes measures taken by the government to maintain an undistorted policy environment. These measures include macroeconomic stability, investment in social and public services and infrastructure, and protection of the environment and vulnerable population groups.

At the same time, the report highlights the gaps in the current governance mechanisms and the challenges facing the Egyptian government. It provides the most significant recommendations on what can be done to improve Egyptian governance.

Sherif added that the report sheds light on many international indicators that analyze Egypt's governance performance. For example, the main assessment of governance worldwide is through The Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI).

Egypt witnessed improvement in five of its six indicators in 2022: voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence, organizational quality, rule of law, and combating corruption.

This improvement resulted from the state's efforts to combat corruption through various strategies, legislative reforms, law enforcement, combating terrorism, and reducing its negative effects.
