Main / Media / News / Egypt’s NIGSD holds a virtual seminar entitled "Gender and Good Governance"

08 May 2021

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, held a virtual seminar entitled "Gender and Good Governance", and the seminar was organized by the Training Network of the Institutes of Administration in Africa (Tanmia) affiliated with the Institute.

The seminar was coordinated by Dr. Hanan Rizk, Head of Development Network; spoke by Ms. Saras Jagwanth, United Nations Regional Adviser.

In this context, Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development emphasized that gender equality is one of the important issues closely related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The 2030 Agenda is to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality, establish peace justice, and strong institutions and create meaningful partnerships that can all be better achieved by integrating a gender concept in governance.

El-Said added that the virtual seminar aims to contribute to discussions on how to strengthen the relationship between gender concepts and good governance, including the eleven principles of effective governance for sustainable development that have been activated by the United Nations Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) and approved by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

On her part, Dr. Sherifa El-Sherif, Executive Director of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), explained that the Tanmia network is the African training initiative of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), which was launched in 2019 to spread the principles of good governance in Africa.

El-Said pointed out that the network organized the virtual seminar in light of the recommendations of more than 100 female leaders from the second batch of the African Women Leaders Training Program in March 2021, to discuss the topic of "Gender and Good Governance."

El-Sherif added that the virtual seminar shed light on the international and regional initiatives already in place in the field of gender equality, and the role of civil servants, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and citizens in promoting gender equality in government.

She explained that the seminar targeted graduates of the various programs of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, and was held in English and French.

The seminar was attended by 85 participants from more than 32 African countries, including Morocco, Uganda, Nigeria, Malawi, Algeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Togo, Guinea, Somalia, South Sudan, Mauritius, South Africa, Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Benin, Codyvoire, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Estonia, Cameron, Liberia, Senegal, Chad, Mali, Ghana, Angola, Rwanda, Zambia, Senegal, Niger.
