27 February 2023

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development held recently the second introductory symposium for the "Youth for Development" initiative at Helwan University - one of the universities participating in the initiative in the academic year 2022-2023.

The symposium witnessed the participation of Dr. Muhammad Alaa, the general supervisor of the initiative. Alaa is also serving as deputy director of the International Cooperation and Conventions Office, and an official of the human rights unit in the ministry.

The President of Helwan University, Dr. El-Sayed Qandil, also attended.

The aforementioned symposium came as part of a series of seminars and introductory visits to universities held by the Ministry of Planning & Economic Development. These seminars introduced the goals of the initiative.

During the symposium, Dr. Muhammad Alaa reviewed the initiative’s goals, its themes, awareness and education, competitions, requirements for preparing development projects, and arbitration criteria for competing projects in the academic year 2022-2023.

Alaa stressed that the Youth for Development initiative is an integral part of the mechanisms for consolidating human rights and the development plans and projects of the Egyptian state.

Alaa explained that the initiative aims mainly to involve youth in policy-making and drafting development projects that help decision-makers and makers achieve the strategic goals of the Egyptian state, which contributes to the involvement of youth in public work with constructive and advanced ideas.

Dr. Mohamed Alaa appreciated the participation of Helwan University in the second academic year of the initiative 2022-2023, which will have a great impact on generalizing the benefit to other universities participating in the initiative in terms of exchanging experiences and spreading the advanced scientific benefit between public, private and private universities.

He praised the contribution of university youth to the process of sustainable development, through the involvement of college students in the state's development initiatives, including: "Youth Initiative for Development" and "The National Initiative for Smart Green Projects in the Governorates of the Arab Republic of Egypt" and areas of governance and smart services.

For his part, Dr. El-Sayed Qandil, President of Helwan University, referred to the university's vision of qualifying a generation of young people capable of leading public action in Egypt within the framework of belief in the principles of a modern civil democratic state that is consistent with the concepts of the new republic.

Mr. Qandil stressed the importance of investing in the university's qualitative majors. These majors are grounded in a wide range of industries.

The introductory symposium included several discussion sessions with students to exchange ideas, within the framework of some sessions on the goals of the Youth for Development initiative, presenting the importance of training programs in linking theories with practical application, and how to prepare and formulate policy papers and development projects.

Dr. Mamdouh Ismail, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, Dr. Hana El-Hilali, President and Managing Director of Al-Khair Microfinance Company, and Ms. Silvia Raafat, Evaluation and Follow-up Coordinator of the National Project for the Development of the Egyptian Family participated in the event.
