Executive Director of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development and Egypt Delegate to the General Governance Committee at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Dr. Sherifa Sherif participated in a session concerned with the “Youth Policy Makers” project launched by the institute during the high-level conference for the “Supporting General and Economic Governance in Egypt” project. The conference is financed by the European Union and implemented by the OECD over the period of the 8th and 9th of February, and attended European Union Ambassador to Cairo Christian Berger.


During the session, Dr. Sherif showcased the historic development of the National Council for Governance and Sustainable Development since its creation, clarifying that the institute’s specialization shifted to governance and sustainable development in 2020, pointing out training, research, government consultations, and sustainable development as the institution’s main role. Dr. Sherif further stressed that governance is an important tool to realize the goals of Egypt Vision 2030 as governance is an ongoing process to reach the goals. Then she added that governance ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of institutions minimizes corruption, realizing sustainable economic development, and offering a better quality of life of the citizens.


In addition, Dr. Sherifa Sherif mentioned the “Be an Ambassador” initiative which is considered one of the most important initiatives launched by the ministry of planning and economic development. She also pointed out that 10,000 applicants applied for the initiative since its  launch in 2020, were 2,300 youth were trained and the distinguished individuals were selected to be part of the Climate Ambassador project. Finally, she stressed the importance of the impact evaluation on the participants.


Furthermore, Dr. Sherif addressed the green minds initiative which reflects the state’s efforts to confront global warming and promoting climate action and in accordance with the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP27 with the objective of raising awareness and reinforcing sustainable behavior for climate change amongst children and students between the ages of 6 and 18. The initiative includes primary, preparatory, and secondary school children by training 1,500 students in seven different schools.


Lastly, Policy Analyst and Project Coordinator at the Governance and Sustainable Development Council Mai Hosny clarified that the institute’s priority for sustainable effect and to enhance the TOT example, and benefit from the youth's capabilities. The Institute organizes Youth Policy Makers” project to raise awareness of the youth (18-25 years of age) regarding sustainable development, while building their capacity, and offering them technical and financial support and transforming it into a tangible initiative led by youth on the ground. She then talked about benefiting from the graduate of the “Be an Ambassador” experience through the Youth Policymakers program.
