Main / Media / News / On WEF sidelines in Davos: Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development meets Indian billionaire Gautam Adani

18 January 2023

Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Hala El-Said met on Wednesday with the billionaire Gautam Adani, the chairman and founder of the Indian multinational conglomerate, Adani Group, to discuss means of cooperation and means of investment in Egypt in various sectors, during her participation in the work of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed investment opportunities in many sectors of Egypt. This included green energy projects and ports.
Dr. Hala El-Said said that Egypt is working to develop all Egyptian ports in the implementation of the directives of the political leadership to make Egypt a global center for trade and logistics.
El-Said asserted the state's keenness to develop ports, by strengthening the vital role of maritime transport and the services of navigational and logistical ports in stimulating international trade, people's movements, and tourist trips, as well as continuing to activate digital transformation programs and automating all services in sea and land ports, as well as the services of logistic centers and dry ports.
On green energy projects, El-Said stressed that the Egyptian state attaches the utmost importance to climate change issues as part of its efforts to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development, with commitment and a serious orientation towards the green economy.

El-Said noted that Egypt has adopted environmental sustainability standards, in addition to coordination and cooperation with the private sector to adopt these standards, in addition to implementing many projects in various sectors, most notably clean transport, water desalination, and new and renewable energy.

El-Said indicated that many estimates show that Egypt will be one of the fastest economies in the region in the field of new and renewable energy over the next ten years.

El-Said said that Egypt is considering launching a package of incentives to promote private investment in the areas of the green economy, noting that it will focus on priority sectors such as green hydrogen and green ammonia production, sustainable transportation, and high-energy-efficient projects.

El-Said talked about The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), pointing to the establishment of the fund as one of the mechanisms to strengthen partnerships with the local and foreign private sectors, as it represents the ideal partner for the private sector.

El-Said explained that the fund provides promising opportunities for joint investment in many development sectors, in addition to its success in concluding many local and international investment partnerships in many fields.
The minister's visit to Davos, Switzerland, featured bilateral meetings with international ministers, as well as CEOs of major companies and institutions. These meetings discussed opportunities to attract investments to Egypt and enhance cooperation between different governments.
