The solid waste management system is one of the most important mechanisms for achieving development goals related to the environment: Says Hala El-SaidThe delegation of the Ministries of Planning, Economic Development, and Environment inspected the projects of the solid waste management system in Cairo Governorate, to follow up on the implemented projects.
The inspection tour also aimed to ensure that the aforementioned projects enter service in a way that improves the efficiency of the system and improves the environmental, economic, and social return from government investments in this field.Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, said that the solid waste management system is one of the most important mechanisms for achieving development goals related to the environment, whether at the level of the UN development goals or the goals of Egypt’s 2030 vision, and achieving more sustainability of environmental resources.
“The Ministry of Planning seeks to support the new system and work with partner ministries to implement it with the highest quality that is reflected in the quality of life of the citizen,” El-Said said. The Minister of Planning and Economic Development added that the new system provides sources of clean energy through recycling technology that aims to generate energy, as well as creating organic fertilizers that serve the agricultural sector and improve the environmental condition of the soil, as well as provide new job opportunities for a large number of young people.Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, explained that, based on the directives of the Prime Minister regarding the implementation of the new waste system, a cooperation protocol was signed between the ministries of (Environment, Local Development, Planning) and the Arab Organization for Industrialization to implement infrastructure work (including raising historical accumulations, establishing intermediate, fixed / mobile, sanitary landfill stations).Yasmine praised the cooperation between the concerned authorities to implement the new cleanliness system, make a major change in the level of hygiene in all governorates, restore the aesthetics of the Egyptian street, and achieve citizen satisfaction with the system, stressing the follow-up of the implementation of the infrastructure that the Ministry of Local Development carries out.
The Minister of Environment asserted that in coordination with the Ministry of Local Development, (5) fixed intermediate stations and (7) mobile stations have been implemented and delivered to the relevant governorates. The implementation of (19) health landfills and (2) waste treatment and recycling plants are being completed.Coordination is made with the Ministries of Local Development and Planning to hold meetings with the governors to review what has been done on the territory of the governorates about the programs of the integrated system for waste management and the development of the basic infrastructure of intermediate stations, sanitary landfills, and treatment and recycling factories, as well as discussing plans that will be implemented during the next period.
Concerning the results of the field inspection, fixed intermediate stations were inspected in Cairo governorate, where Dr. Heba Mugheeb, Head of the Regional Planning Sector at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, instructed the necessity of expediting the entry into service of fixed intermediate stations that were delivered to the governorate, such as (a fixed intermediate station in the Nasser facility, a fixed intermediate station in Mokattam).Coordination was also made with the preservation of the commitment to receive building and demolition waste only at the fixed intermediate station on Port Said Street and transporting it to the engineering dump for safe disposal.
The projects being implemented in the Fayoum governorate have also been inspected, which are the health landfill in Kom Ushim, where the implementation rates range from 60%, and it is expected to be completed and delivered to the governorate during May 2021.A fixed intermediate station has also been assigned to Youssef Al-Siddiq, whose implementation rates range from 80% and will be delivered to the governorate during April 2021.
