Completion of rehabilitation and lining of 831 km canals in various governorates, for EGP 3 billion: says Hala El-Said

The delegation of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development headed by Dr. Jamil Helmy, Assistant Minister for the follow-up of the sustainable development plan, and Mr. Mohamed Farid, Assistant Minister for National Projects inspected recently several canals rehabilitation and lining projects in Minya Governorate, including the Dussot canal rehabilitation project, with a length of 7.9 km, for EGP 21 million, with a completion rate of 45%.
This was during the delegation's field tour in the governorate for the second day in a row, to follow up on the achievement rates and the absence of obstacles in the villages of the presidential initiative "A Dignified Life."
In this context, Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development explained that the follow-up data reveal the completion of the rehabilitation and lining of canals with a length of 831 km, in various governorates of Egypt, until January 2021, at a cost of about EGP 3 billion.
El-Said pointed out that the funding available for the project has exceeded so far EGP 4 billion and an increase in funding is being studied in light of implementation rates.

During the visit, Dr. Jamil Helmy, Assistant Minister of planning to follow up the sustainable development plan, indicated that the project of rehabilitating and lining canals in Minya governorate includes 104 canals with a length of 400 km, for EGP 1.1 billion, pointing out that the lining and rehabilitation of 100 km have been completed.

Helmy reviewed canals rehabilitation and lining projects in the East Samalout Engineering Department of the General Administration of Irrigation in East Minya, indicating that the lining and rehabilitation of the waterways intersecting with the Samalut axis, 28.1 km long, for EGP 75.7 million, including 4 Safsafa branches 4 km long.
On the economic and social importance of rehabilitation and lining projects for canals, Mr. Mohamed Farid, Assistant Minister of Planning for National Projects, explained that they contribute to achieving fairness in water distribution, saving water, and protecting the environment.

Moreover, it provides work diaries for village residents during the implementation of projects, as well as resulting in acquired lands on both sides of the canals that can be used in establishing projects for youth.
