Main / Media / News / Egypt’s NIGSD disuses global governance indicators with a World Bank‘s senior official

15 January 2021

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD) - the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development - held recently an interactive session via the video conference feature; It was hosted by Mr. Aart Kraay, Director of Development Policy in the Development Economics Vice Presidency and World Bank Group Deputy Chief Economist to talk about the six global governance indicators.

The six global governance indicators include voice and accountability, political stability, absence of violence, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, law enforcement, and control of corruption.

The interactive session dealt with what the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development can offer to implement governance reforms in the state’s administrative apparatus, as well as strengthening the partnership between the private sector and civil society on the one hand and the government on the other hand.

In this context, Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of NIGSD emphasized that governance ultimately increases confidence in the national economy, deepens the role of the money market, increases its ability to mobilize savings and raise investment rates.

El-Said added that governance also seeks to preserve the rights of the minority or small investors, noting that governance also encourages the growth of the private sector and supports its competitiveness, thus creating decent job opportunities, and also contributes to fighting corruption and the emergence of a capable and effective public sector that provides community service and provides high rates of growth.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sherifa El-Sherif, Executive Director of the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development said that the cooperation between the Institute and the World Bank comes within the framework of assessing the state of governance in Egypt.

She explained that NIGSD is implementing the state of governance through building the capabilities of its employees as well as building the capacities of workers and those interested in developing and implementing governance policies in the state’s administrative apparatus, the private sector, and civil society.

El-Sherif stated that NIGSD, in its new form, is entrusted with monitoring Egypt's classification about governance and sustainable development indicators, in addition to supporting Egypt's position in the classification by developing relevant strategies and action plans.
