Main / Media / News / Minister of Planning and Economic Development: Egypt advanced 11 places in ease of doing business index

16 December 2020

Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, said that the UN Sustainable Development Strategy is a strategy that was announced by the United Nations in 2015 and defines 17 UN goals that take into account the economic, social, and environmental dimensions.El-Said indicated that Egypt was one of the first countries to adopt sustainable development goals and set its Egypt's Vision 2030 agenda, which is in line with the United Nations goals of sustainable development, adding that Egypt's approach, which it has adopted since 2015, is that it sets all its long- or medium-term plans to take place in a participatory manner. The minister pointed out that Egypt's Vision 2030 was based on a community dialogue discussion with media professionals, parliamentarians, university professors, specialists, civil society, the private sector, and academics, and the three dimensions of sustainable development were agreed upon. She explained that Egypt is not isolated from the world, so what it has reached in achieving the sustainable development goals is reviewed and compared with the UN goals, as national and international targets for sustainable development have been set.El-Said added that Egypt has advanced in a wide range of indicators, noting that Egypt ranked 83rd out of 166 countries in the Sustainable Development Index after it was ranked 92 in the previous year, confirming that there are some indicators in which Egypt achieved higher than the target. On the level of targets for economic growth and the labor market, El-Said stated that Egypt has achieved rates of lower unemployment better than the target by 125%, as a decrease in the unemployment rate of 7.3% has been achieved. She noted Egypt's superiority in indicators related to the quality of infrastructure, the quality of roads and the indicator of electricity generation, as well as indicators of competitiveness and the indicator on intellectual property. The minister pointed out that Egypt has advanced 11 ranks in the Ease of Doing Business Index, and that the indicator of women's participation in the workforce is close to the target, due to the first period of exposure to the Corona crisis, which affected women's work, as well as their exposure to some family circumstances.El-Said added that Egypt is advanced in the innovation sub-index and the percentage of the population using the internet, as well as the innovation sub-index for trade and competition. In conclusion, El-Said explained that the initiatives that have taken place in education and health, the Dignified Life initiative, and the establishment, renewal, and expansion of more than 419 schools in the villages most in need led to the progress of Egypt in all indicators. This came during an interview of Minister El-Said on the "Cairo Talk" program broadcast on the "Al Qahera Wel Nas” channel.
