Main / Media / News / Egypt advances 19 places in the human development index compared to the 2020 report: Minister of Planning

09 September 2022

H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, said that Egypt has advanced by 19 places in the Human Development Index, as part of the Global Human Development Report for the year 2021-2022, which was launched by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) yesterday at a global event.

El-Said stressed that this progress is a clear reflection of the development plans implemented by the Egyptian state during the past years and a natural result of what has been achieved by national projects and presidential initiatives in all fields, especially the fields of health and education.

El-Said added that Egypt reached 97th place compared to 116th place in the 2020 report, despite the decline in the value of the index globally for two consecutive years.

The Minister of Planning and Economic Development also clarified that Egypt's rank rose in the index and joined the group of countries with high human development instead of the group of countries with medium human development.

El-Said pointed out that Egypt's high ranking in the index is due to its improved performance in the indicators of the dimensions of knowledge (the fourth UN goal: quality education) and a decent standard of living (the eighth UN goal: economic growth and decent work).

Dr. Hala El-Said pointed out that Egypt's ranking in the human development index witnessed an improvement during the period (2015-2021).

El-Said explained that the annual average growth of the human development index in Egypt is estimated at 0.73% during the period from 2010-2021, which represents an increase from the previous ten years (2000-2010), which was estimated at 0.64%.

El-Said stressed that this progress that Egypt has achieved with independent UN testimony and following international mechanisms and methodology that it is moving on the right path.
