24 August 2022

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, held a seminar to raise awareness of sustainable development and climate change in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications.
The seminar came within the framework of the grant provided by the Ministry of Communications to recent graduates to obtain a master's degree from the University of Ottawa - Canada.

Dr. Sharifa Sherif, Executive Director of NIGSD, said that the current climate and environmental crises affect all countries of the world.

Sherif pointed to the importance of reducing those risks by focusing on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and proactive measures.
Sherif indicated the Egyptian state's interest in educating young people about the importance of the issue of climate change through the implementation of various initiatives such as ambassadors for sustainable development and climate ambassadors.

These initiatives aim to raise public awareness about the national sustainable development goals, in preparation for Egypt's hosting of the COP 27 climate conference in Sharm El Sheikh next November.

Sherif explained that the "Climate Ambassadors" program provides information and advanced topics on climate change in cooperation with experts from UNIDO, UNICEF, Strathclyde, the University of Dundee, and Al Maktoum University.

The first phase of the program targets 500 outstanding graduates of the “Ambassadors for Sustainable Development (Be an Ambassador)” initiative, who have been accredited as trainers through this initiative.

During the symposium, Hamada Qaoud, a sustainable development researcher at the institute, reviewed the impact of climate change on the economic and health aspect in different countries of the world.

Qaoud referred to the Egyptian state's efforts to confront the repercussions of climate change, including the establishment of solar energy plants, the new administrative capital, the monorail project, and other green projects.

The symposium included several axes, including introducing the concept of sustainable development and its political dimensions, sustainable development goals, Egypt's position in the Sustainable Development Report 2020, and introducing climate changes and their relationship to sustainable development.

The symposium was attended by 34 trainees from the master's scholarship students provided by the Ministry of Communications in cooperation with the University of Ottawa - Canada.
