Main / Media / News / National Initiative for Smart Green Projects discusses arrangements for the projects door opening on August 21

18 August 2022

The National Initiative for Smart Projects held a coordination meeting under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said, Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development and supervisor of the initiative.
The meeting witnessed the presence of Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt and Chairman of the Jury Committee at the National Level for Smart Green Projects in the initiative, Ambassador Hisham Badr, General Coordinator of the Initiative, and Eng. Khaled Mostafa, Permanent Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.

The meeting discussed the latest arrangements for the initiative before officially opening the door for submission for smart green projects on the initiative's platform on August 21.
During the meeting, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin stressed the importance of documenting all the steps that have taken place since the launch of the initiative so that it can be built on in the future, noting that the initiative recognizes the absent dimension of sustainable development, which is the issue of climate, where the whole world suffers from climate change.

Mohieldin indicated that the main idea of the initiative is to create a priority for sustainability and that the project developed for the initiative should be complete in terms of opportunities, advantages, and challenges associated with digital transformation.
Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin explained that work in the initiative is carried out through two main axes, a local axis led by the governorates, and then a national axis in which projects are selected.

Ambassador Hisham Badr said that the initiative is an unprecedented unique opportunity that focuses on implementation and implementation on the ground, in the context of Egypt's readiness to host COP 27.
The initiative also emphasizes the seriousness of dealing with the environmental dimension and climate change within the framework of achieving sustainable development goals and digital transformation by presenting projects that achieve these goals.
He made it clear that according to the initiative, a map will be drawn up at the governorate level for green and smart projects, linking them to funding bodies, and attracting the necessary investments for them from inside and outside.
For his part, Eng. Khaled Mustafa explained that each governorate will determine a list of smart green projects through regulated rules for selection.
He pointed out that the targeted areas in the initiative include projects based on environmentally friendly business practices that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, projects to enhance energy and resource efficiency, and projects to reduce biodiversity loss and ecosystem services.

The meeting was attended by several leaders and representatives of the ministries of planning, communications, and international cooperation and the National Council for Women, and via video conference; Dr. Hisham El-Helbawy, Assistant Minister of Local Development, Sarah El-Batouty, ECOnsult, and Dr. Ahmed Fathy, sustainable development expert.

It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister had issued Resolution No. 2738 of 2022 regarding the launch of a national initiative for smart green projects in the governorates of the Republic.
