23 July 2022

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, represented by Egypt, participated in the final conference for pilot activities to measure illicit financial flows in Africa.

The conference has been organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa.

Twelve African countries attended the conference, which presented their experience in calculating illegal financial flows.

During the conference, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development presented the Egyptian experience as a world leader in measuring the two dimensions of illicit financial flows: trade and taxes on the one hand, and those related to drugs and crime on the other.

Lauren Habib also reviewed the time frame for the implementation of the project and the steps that have been taken since its inception until now, while ensuring the presence of appropriate representation for all national authorities concerned with the file.

Habib also reviewed building the capacities of the national team of experts by holding virtual and actual workshops and follow-up meetings, in addition to presenting the results reached at the current stage, in addition to the challenges facing the implementation of the project and the required support from the United Nations specialized agencies, and finally, the remaining steps to reach the final output.

The attendees from African countries praised the general framework that Egypt is committed to in adopting practical statistical steps to measure illegal financial flows.
