15 July 2022

Dr. Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, participated in a session entitled “Challenges and Emerging Solutions in Measuring Performance and Impact and Enhancing Policy Coherence to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030,” which was held within the activities of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2022 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
During the session, Dr. Ahmed Kamali stressed that all countries need more spending to try to catch up, especially after the setbacks suffered by different countries.
Kamali pointed out that there are a set of challenges, including the limited fiscal space in addition to the high cost of borrowing due to the tight monetary policy, and the difficulty of mobilizing private investments that were already suffering from the repercussions of the epidemic.
Kamali pointed to the importance of the need to deal with the high rates of poverty and inequality.
Kamali explained that in the short term, more social protection policies and programs can be proposed, especially in terms of targeted conditional benefits.
While in the long term, equal opportunities must be ensured through a policy focused on raising the characteristics of citizens.
On the lessons that can be learned from current experiences to expand or reverse the negative impact of the epidemic on sustainable development goals, Kamali stressed the importance of having strong foundations and a resilient economy.

Kamali pointed to the need to continue promoting productive sectors and owning a diversified and balanced economy, and the importance of proactive policies that balance providing life requirements, continuity of work and production, and careful handling of the pandemic, in addition to the importance of settling sustainable development goals.

Dr. Ahmed Kamali also pointed out during his speech the importance of green recovery, explaining that the Egyptian state increased the percentage of green projects in the investment plan for 20/2021 to 15%, and 30% in the fiscal year 21/2022.

It is targeted that this percentage will reach 50% by 24/2025.
