05 July 2022

Jamil Helmy, Assistant Minister of Planning and Economic Development for Follow-up Affairs of the Sustainable Development Plan, participated in the opening session of the closing conference of the "Views from the Front Line" project, which was organized by the Arab Network for Environment and Development "Raed", in cooperation with the Global Network for Disaster Risk Reduction and three local associations.
During his speech, Helmy said that the Egyptian state is at the forefront of the countries in the region, which launched the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (2017-2030), intending to respond to internal, international, and regional changes to reduce disaster risks.

Helmy added that the year 2018, witnessed the issuance of the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 1146, regarding the creation of a new administration in all units of the state’s administrative apparatus under the name “Strategic Management”, which consists of 4 sub-divisions, represented in “Strategic Planning and Policies, Project Management, Follow-up assessment, crisis and disaster management, and risk reduction.

Helmy touched on the initiative for a decent life launched by the President in January 2019, as part of his efforts to mitigate the impact of the economic reform program on citizens in the neediest areas.

Helmy stressed that the Egyptian government has taken and is still taking great strides in confronting the repercussions of climate change, by shifting towards a green and sustainable economy, to confront the negative effects and risks arising from it, especially on environmental and natural resources.

Helmy explained that the Egyptian government realizes that it is inevitable to take accelerated steps to confront the potential threats of climate change, especially in the regions most vulnerable to its repercussions.

Helmy pointed out that one of the most important ambitious steps taken in this context was the launch of the "National Climate Change Strategy 2050", as well as the readiness of the Egyptian state with all its agencies to launch the "National Hydrogen Strategy", in addition to issuing green bonds worth $750 million.

Helmy added that in preparation for hosting the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change “COP 27” next November, Egypt is preparing to launch more than 20 green projects in five sectors, including electricity, renewable energy, transportation, agriculture, water, and oil and gas, with a total cost of more than $ 120 billion.
