Planning, Environment ministers review Egypt’s vision for hosting COP27
04 July 2022
H.E. Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, held a meeting with Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, Ministerial Coordinator, and Envoy of the COP27 Climate Conference, to follow up on the work related to the preparations for Egypt's hosting of the COP27 Climate Conference.
During the meeting, Dr. Hala El-Said stressed the importance of coordination and cooperation between all ministries to prepare for COP27 and the need to exploit the event to express what has been achieved in the Egyptian state in recent years.
She explained that the Ministry of Planning was able to connect the projects in the investment plan to green projects, with a percentage of approximately 40% of the total plan projects, and aims to increase this percentage in the next fiscal year.
The Minister of Planning also reviewed the ministry's vision in implementing the (solutions) day, one of the substantive days, in which the Ministry of Planning will organize its activities during the cop27.
The day will include a set of topics, top of which are sustainable cities and sustainable transport, as well as an opportunity to present the efforts of the private sector in creating environmentally-friendly solutions.
It will also include an important aspect for entrepreneurs with ideas and projects aimed at improving the environmental situation.
The Minister of Planning and Economic Development also clarified that the ministry will actively participate in another number of COP days with a set of events and initiatives, for example, participating in a session on the Finance Day on the Union of African Sovereign Funds, which was announced in Morocco last week with the participation of The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE).
The Ministry will also participate in several activities on Science Day as well as on Youth Day with initiatives such as Green Minds and Climate Ambassadors.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad began her speech by praising the constructive cooperation between the two ministries in many files, including working to integrate environmental sustainability and climate change issues into the local and national planning process and various economic policies.
The Minister of Environment referred to the plan and procedures that were recently approved by the Supreme Committee concerned with preparing for the upcoming climate conference, and how each ministry will work.
Yasmine explained that it was agreed to define a "solutions day" within the unofficial days of the conference, meaning the Ministry of Planning.
This day depends on presenting ideas and innovations for reducing emissions or adapting to the effects of climate change.
The two sides reviewed the procedures and activities to be carried out by the Ministry of Planning on that day, and the bodies that can provide technical support in this regard. They also reviewed the green projects carried out in cooperation between the two ministries, and the measures that have been taken.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad explained that during "Solutions Day" a session will be devoted to waste, during which the Global Initiative for Waste 50 by 2050, which will be launched during the upcoming COP27 climate conference, will be presented.
The two sides agreed to prepare a working paper with the procedures and activities to be carried out by the Ministry of Planning and how to manage the "Solution Day" to be discussed during the current month, as each ministry will be fully responsible for its day.
