28 June 2022

Dr. Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, participated today in the final conference to analyze the results of the fifth Egyptian economic census for the year 2017/2018.
The conference included several sessions on maximizing the economic return of economic establishments, women and the labor market, economic activity and public policies, and developing the next economic census form.
During his speech, Dr. Ahmed Kamali, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, stressed the keenness of the Egyptian government and the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, as a member of the government, to invest in evidence-based policies.
Kamali affirmed the Ministry of Planning's support for all policy efforts based on applied and quantitative research, adding that the research papers presented, an important part of which is related to the policies that must be taken.
Kamali added that the cooperation that took place through workshops to analyze economic census data represents a role model, as it is a model of cooperation between the government and the private sector represented by the Baseera Foundation and the Macroeconomic Reform and Stability Project funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and a group of researchers.

Kamali stressed that this cooperation is in the interest of the country and the policies in addition to the interest of the researchers themselves in terms of the government taking into account the research of these researchers and their use, which represents a major goal for any serious researcher in research work that benefits the private sector, government and civil society as well.

On the importance of the economic census, Kamali explained that it does not only describe Egypt’s economic situation but can be used to improve the quality of some important data, including the statement of national product, adding that the data on the economic census was used to improve and review output values.

Kamali touched on the role of the National Accounts Unit at the Ministry of Planning, pointing out that they used the results of the census to create time series for the output at the governorate level.

Kamali explained that the economic census data is important to have an output distributed over the various activities at the governorate level, as the census has also been used in the governorate-level competitiveness index, which will be officially launched soon.

Kamali touched on the importance of data, which represents one of the most important investments, adding that without data, there would be no accurate information, or the ability to know the development situation in Egypt or to formulate policies.
