28 June 2022

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, represented by the Sustainable Development Unit headed by Dr. Mona Essam, participated; In the second meeting of the technical committee of the project "Sustainable Development Goals Financing Strategy in Egypt".

The project is carried out in cooperation between the Egyptian government and the United Nations, with funding from the Joint Sustainable Development Goals Fund, at the headquarters of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Dr. Mona Essam, Head of the Sustainable Development Unit at the Ministry of Planning and the ministry's focal point for coordinating the implementation of the project's components, said that the meeting aims to follow up on the implementation of the project by presenting the progress made in its various components and discussing any obstacles impeding the implementation process.

During the meeting, Dr. Mona Essam reviewed the outcomes of the first meeting of the Technical Committee in April 2021, in which representatives of 11 national stakeholders and 6 United Nations agencies implementing the project participated.

Essam explained that it was agreed to add the environment and green transformation sector to the five sectors under study in the project, which are education, health, social protection, water and sanitation, and transportation, with the intersection of the gender dimension, in addition to adopting the proposed timetable for the joint program.

For his part, Scott Standley, an economist at the office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt, reviewed the global context and its developments in integrated national frameworks for financing the sustainable development goals, stressing the importance of working on the sustainability of the implementation of the sub-components even after the end of the project period.

Sylvain Merlin, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program and the agency responsible for technical leadership of the joint program, noted the progress and results achieved so far in the project's sub-components, as well as the remaining steps to complete the implementation of the project components until the following December.

It is noteworthy that the "Sustainable Development Goals Financing Strategy in Egypt" project aims to achieve three main goals, namely calculating the costs needed to implement the UN goals, evaluating the current situation, and identifying trends in funding flows and the related financing gaps.
