Main / Media / News / NIGSD runs a workshop to discuss the structure of the national governance index in cooperation

10 May 2022

The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD), the training arm of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, held a workshop for private sector institutions and civil society organizations to discuss the structure of the national governance indicator, in cooperation with the Economic Governance Project funded by the US Agency for International Development.

The workshop witnessed the presence of Dr. Sharifa Sharif, Executive Director of NIGSD, Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the Working Group of the Economic Governance Project funded by the USAID, Dr. Khaled Zakaria Amin, Senior Consultant of the Economic Governance Project, and Dr. Asma Ezzat, Director of the Governance Center at NIGSD.
During her speech at the workshop, Dr. Sharifa Sharif said that the National Governance Index was discussed during several sessions with different spectrums of experts and academics, noting that this session with the private sector and civil society is one of the important sessions in preparing the index.

Sharif reviewed the tasks and work of the institute, the training programs it provides at the local and African levels, the research and consultancy it provides in the field of governance, and the dissemination of a culture of governance and sustainable development.
Sharif added that the National Governance Index represents a self-diagnostic tool that monitors the reality of efforts made to strengthen governance and how to improve it.

Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the Working Group of the Economic Governance Project funded by the US Agency for International Development, explained that the Economic Governance Project is a 5-year project that ends in 2025 and is working with a large number of partners in Egypt.
Abdullah said that the project has 3 main objectives, including supporting the Egyptian government by studying Egypt's position in many indicators issued by international institutions and examining how to improve those conditions and classifications.

For his part, Dr. Khaled Zakaria Amin explained that the national indicator of governance is developed through data on the Egyptian issue, and the definitions and dimensions of corruption.

Amin explained that the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development is the technical arm of the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development in preparing the national indicator of governance, and a large number of preparatory sessions have been held to prepare the indicator.

Dr. Asmaa Ezzat gave a presentation in which she reviewed the concept of governance, and the definition and objectives of the national indicator of governance, explaining that the importance of creating a national indicator of governance is to monitor Egypt's performance in various areas related to governance.
