System of National Accounts (SNA)

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development ensures to provide an available and comprehensive database for economic and social data and information that helps policymakers and decision makers to know accurately the current situation and accurately predict future tendencies. National accounts are at the forefront of these data and information, which give the big picture of the national economy and highlight the interlocking relationships between different sectors and activities through the calculations of goods and services, integrated economic accounts, sectoral accounts and calculations of the economic activities of non-financial projects.

The framework and approaches of national accounts is designed within an international framework through the United Nations Statistical Commission, with a view to developing unified systems for use by all countries. The United Nations Statistics Section sets and updates standard criteria, guidelines, training materials and manuals for the composition of national accounts and economic statistics needed to implement the systems of national accounts, and they are updated when necessary. The 2008 system is the latest version of the SNA to achieve consistency of the SNA with the publications of the international institutions involved in the development of national accounts systems and to address the issues posed by economic and technological developments and the needs of users.

Egypt currently implements the 1993 SNA in part after introducing some changes provided for by the current (SNA 2008). The structure of national accounts in Egypt is similar to the structure of the 1993 SNA and the 2008 SNA, in terms of dividing the national economy into regulatory sectors and activity classifications, as well as in terms of the types and sequences of accounts offered, but it stops at the capital account and does not include the structure of the financial account or budget statements.

National Accounts Publication

Since 1995/1996, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has published the outcomes of national accounts in accordance with the rules and recommendations of the SNA 1993, as amended (SNA 2008), and in line with the requirements of the International Monetary Fund for Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS). The balanced picture of national accounts adds a new dimension to the economic planners and decision makers to formulate economic policies in the medium and long term, and contributes to greater transparency for the development of economic indicators to rationalize decisions of both domestic and foreign investment.
