02 December 2021

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (NIGSD) concluded the activities of the specialized batch for media professionals and journalists from the “Be an Ambassador initiative”.

During her speech, Dr. Sharifa Sherif confirmed that the "Be an Ambassador" initiative is one of the most important initiatives launched by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in cooperation with the Institute.

Sherif indicated that the initiative was launched in 2020 and more than 7,000 candidates submitted to it, stressing that about 1,100 young men and women were trained during the first year in the age group of 18-35 years, after which the candidates were filtered and about 500 young men and girls were chosen as ambassadors for sustainable development.

Sherif pointed out the importance of evaluating the training impact of the initiative on the trainees, noting the implementation of new phases of the "Be an Ambassador" initiative in the coming months, targeting a new group of media professionals and journalists to be ambassadors for sustainable development to familiarize citizens with the SDGs goals.

Sherif highlighted the presidential initiative "Decent Life" and the Egyptian Family Development Project and their impact on achieving the17 SDGs, as well as achieving the goals of Egypt's Vision 2030, in addition to the role of government as a key tool for achieving sustainable development.

Sherif emphasized that governance plays a key role in achieving each of the three dimensions of sustainable development, economic, social, and environmental.
For his part, Dr. Hussein Abaza stressed the importance of the media’s pivotal role as an effective authority in raising community awareness of the UN goals and supporting the implementation of sustainable development in Egypt.

Abaza referred to the role of the “Be an Ambassador” initiative in spreading a culture of sustainable development among the youth participating in the initiative to be in turn ambassadors for development in their universities, and other social circles.

Amira Hossam, Assistant Minister of Planning for Sustainable Development Affairs and coordinator of the initiative pointed out the important role that journalists and media professionals play, as they are an awareness tool and a channel for communication with the public.

Amira explained that the group of young people from the “Be an Ambassador” initiative, which was launched last November, is currently incubating their projects that they have undertaken after the training and qualification period within the initiative through cooperation with the Business Incubator of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University.

After the initiative’s activities, Dr. Sharifa Sharif and Dr. Hussein Abaza handed over the trainees’ certificates of participation in the initiative.

Moreover, the discussion was opened with the trainees, and their opinions and suggestions were received, which will be taken into account when implementing the new phases of the initiative.
